"Babushka Maya" |
My sister in-law's mother. A gift for my sister-in-law. |
| Born in Hebron, China (famous for its ice sculptures) of Russian parents and living in New Jersey she had quite a surprise on coming to visit the other grandmother in the Kentucky hill country. |
After lunch we sat and sang Russian folk songs together (in Russian), The Volga Boatmen, Katieusha, Midnight in Moscow, In the Field the Birch Tree Grows and the required Dark Eyes or Ochi Cheorniye. The songs are the only thing I remember now from my studies at the Defense Language Institute, Monterey, Calif. some 40 years ago. |
