I took liberties here and left out all sign of
human habitation. Pan to the right to take in about 120 degrees or about 25 miles of
mountain and imagine trying to cross those mountains with all your belongings on a pack
horse. It was the Gateway to the West in 1800. 300,000 people
made the trip including a 13 year old boy named George Caleb
Bingham. He went on to Missouri and became one of America's greatest
painters of the 19th century. |
