Dutch - 17th century.  Rembrandt whose drawings kept his name alive for 300 years until the art historians of the early 1900's discovered how great the paintings really were.  He took the Italian chiaroscuro and made a career of it.  There were mimickers so be careful with attributions at the local museum and in the art histories.  Every so often another will be proven to not be by Rembrandt's hand.  Check out 'The Man in the Golden Helmet" for articles older than 1990!

Rembrandt's favor has always oscillated.  He made and lost three fortunes during his own lifetime.  Since then he has been both a god and somewhat the lesser.
