"Cataract at Capito"

|
Go west from Middlesboro, Ky. on highway 74 and you can see this waterfall on the right side of the road. It's just over a mile beyond the coal loading facility at the mouth of Hignite Hollow. For safety drive beyond the fall and find a turn around. There is a pull over at the fall but take reasonable care as the side falls off slightly below road level. 50 ton coal trucks frequently come down from the mines higher up the mountain at Garmeda and beyond. The flow of the fall will vary widely with the rainfall and the fall freezes beautifully in winter. The stream goes under the roadway and empties into the Stony Fork. |
