Thank

on whether to become an instructor.
REQUIREMENTS
FOR BECOMING A DRIVING SAFETY INSTRUCTOR (DSI)
The TEA requires that
each potential instructor complete a 36-hour instructor development course (IDC). The IDC classes are divided into two blocks
of instruction. The first block is a 24-hour training class held over a 2 or 3 day period. Each class consists of the basics
of defensive driving and the rules and regulations of the driving safety industry. Once this block is completed, the potential
instructor will complete the remaining block of instructing by teaching (2) six-hour live classes with a trainer present.
This last block of instruction is scheduled when the potential instructor is ready and can be completed anywhere in the state
provided a trainer is available in the area.
In addition to the 36-hour
IDC class, the TEA requires that a potential instructor:
1.
is of good reputation; and
2.
holds a valid driver’s license for the preceding five years, which has not been suspended, revoked,
or forfeited in the past five years for traffic related violations.
3.
Any felony conviction or a DWI conviction within the last 7 years is grounds for denial of an instructor
license.
